Michael Blackmore (1938-2015) was a self-taught artist. After a career as a lithographer in the printing industry he became a freelance illustrator specialising in reconstructions of industrial scenes. He lived in Abergavenny all his life and drew inspiration from the wealth of industrial archaeology remains in the region. His drawings and paintings were published in numerous books, guides and brochures where they brought the past to life through careful research and a meticulous attention to detail.
His speciality was the canals of south east Wales and the network of horse drawn railways usually known as tramroads. These connected the ironworks, mines and quarries to the canal. This area includes the Blaenavon industrial World Heritage Site. The region was internationally important during the industrial revolution and the iron produced there was exported around the world.
