Our exhibitions are the cornerstone of Swansea Festival of Stitch where the talents of our local stitchers are available for everyone to see. The local groups, Swansea Quilters, Baywood Quilters, Itchyfingers Textile Group, Stitches Coven, Wednesday Stitchers, Swansea Embroidery and Textile Group (formerly Swansea Embroiderer’s Guild) were all part of the 2016 celebrations and are again bringing together their ‘Sea’ inspired textile art to exhibitions around Swansea.
In 2018 we have invited more groups and artists to join us and we are welcoming Natasha Morgan, a creator of extraordinary hand made dolls, Haf Weighton a very talented stitch artist who has exhibited in the Saatchi Gallery in London and Ruth Norbury an artist whose hand stitching can literally take your breath away, to put on their own exhibitions. We are also bringing three talented groups to Swansea, Cutting Edge Textiles, a multi-talented textile group based in the Vale of Glamorgan, Naturally Sew a relatively new group from the Newport Area and Cwilt Cymru, a very successful and established fine art quilting group whose members all have Welsh connections. We are extremely pleased that some students of Gower College will be displaying their work in the gallery at Volcano Theatre in High Street Swansea.
As a crowning glory to the two -week celebrations, we are having our very first Quilt Expo on the 18th and 19th August which is bringing together over 170 quilts from all over South Wales. We are delighted that a Yarn-bombing group is going to decorate the area around Mumbles Pier, it will be a colourful, amusing and outstanding collection of ‘sea’ creations. Our schools project has developed so well that we will have ‘sea’ inspired deckchairs outside the Mumbles Pier and within the garden at Swansea Museum plus a return of the decorative bollard covers outside the Museum that were so popular in 2016.
At Swansea Museum, Cwilt Cymru will be exhibiting in the Main Gallery and ContexArt will be returning to the Long Gallery after their successful exhibition in 2016. Perhaps from here you can move onto one of our new venues the Environment Centre in Pier Street, artists, Ruth Norbury and Haf Weighton will show an exhibition of contrasting styles and interpretations of our theme the Sea.
At the National Waterfront Museum of Wales Swansea Quilters and Baywood Quilters will return there after their very successful 2016 exhibition. This talented group of ladies has over 60 members and is a thriving group of quilters in Swansea. From the Neath area we have group of quilters, the Wednesday Stitchers, exhibiting in the Civic Centre, they had a very popular exhibition in Tapestri bar and bistro in 2016, a venue into which the textile group Cutting Edge has slotted.
Be prepared for something entirely different in the foyer of the Dragon Hotel, doll artist Natasha Morgan will have her unique doll ‘Mor Tywyll’ on display alongside the Naturally Sew group exhibition who will be coming from Newport to join us! Inside the Volcano exhibition venue on High Street we are delighted to have an exhibition from students of Gower College, prepare to be challenged and delighted.
We have lots to see in the Grand Theatre with exhibitions here from two well-known textile very successful groups, Itchyfingers Textiles and Stitches Coven. As usual the exhibitions will showcase wonderful textile art from many talented people. Most of our exhibitions are within Swansea, but we have the work of Swansea Embroidery and Textile (formerly Swansea Embroiderers Guild )group on display in the Beach Hut café and gift shop. Outside you can see our amazing yarn -bombing and decorated deck-chairs which are bound to cheer and amuse!
Our first Quilt Expo will be held within the Leisure Centre, and we will have over 170 quilts on display which is an outstanding result for our first time out. This exhibition is on solely for 18th and 19th August, the others are visible over the two-week period 10th– 24th August but please check with our website or brochure and venue for dates and opening hours. We certainly don’t want anyone to be disappointed to not catch our wonderful exhibitions.
There will be a marvellous range of textile art on display around Swansea, with literally something for everyone, we hope you all enjoy this delightful opportunity to see the talents of local artists and makers and perhaps be inspired yourself to start Stitching!
