Swansea Festival of Stitch will be bringing seven brilliant tutors to Swansea Museum this August with each tutor bring skills and techniques to learn.
On Tuesday August 9th with Becky Adams, you will be able to create your own fabric keepsake book. Using a personal memory or event as a starting point then illustrate with applique, stitch, layers of fabrics. This could become an heirloom treasure – perhaps to celebrate the birth of a baby or a landmark birthday. Becky will bring lots of resources but a full requirements list will come with the booking form.
On Wednesday 10th August internationally renowned quilt artist Bethan Ash will be demonstrating ‘Improvised Free-Form Collage’. In this relaxing and inspiring workshop you’ll design and complete a small block or collage which can be used as a cushion, framed or a starting point for a larger project. This is a workshop suitable for all levels.
Amanda Hislop is travelling from Oxfordshire to be with us on the 11th of August. The workshop will be an exploration of layers in land and seascapes, recreated using a variety of paper and fabrics along with natural plant fragments and fibres. Paint will be used as to add dimension and depth and altogether creating an unique surface on which to stitch.
In our second week Smith and Jones Knits will be taking our workshop on Tuesday August 16th and you can expect a day of knitterly bliss where you can knit either the shawl or mitts from the new ‘Severn Collection’. These are two original designs and are available even before they are due to go to press. This workshop is packed with technique and will provide insights into the design process, including how to manipulate a simple stitch pattern for a range of effect.
Mandy Nash will be exploring ‘Textures in Felt’ on Wednesday August 17th This is a chance to develop your feltmaking skills by experimenting with a selection of wool pieces to create a variety of textures in felt using resists and fabric. Samples will be made on the day but the techniques can easily be transferred to hats, vessels and wallpieces – forming a perfect canvas for hand or machine embroidery.
Our final workshop on Thursday 18th August Sheila Davies is going to introduce us to her rich and wonderful stitching. The workshop will explore colour in applying paint and stitch to create a sumptuous background that could be turned into a fabulous ‘Jungle Book’ full of dense texture and fabulous stitches. This will be an enjoyable day full creative stitching.
Workshops are booked through Lesley lesleydianathomas@gmail.com. All our workshops are at Swansea Museum, Victoria Road, SA1 1SN, from 10 – 4.
