The Masterclasses are a key part of the Festival, we have brought to Swansea some of the finest tutors in the textile field to Swansea Museum, every day from 10th – 24th August. Classes run from 10am – 4pm, cost £30 a day and you will be guaranteed an amazing day learning new skills and meeting like-minded people.
We have already had four sell-outs but there are still some brilliant Masterclasses available. On our opening day Friday August 10th, Georgina Newson, who is a member of Cwilt Cymru, will be demonstrating how to create a richly textured and layered cloth. She will use dyeing, discharge, stencilling and mark-making with the emphasis on techniques that can easily be done in the kitchen at home without expensive equipment or lots of space. She is using the Sea as ‘inspiration’ but the techniques can be used to fit any theme or challenge.
On the weekend of 11th and 12th August Jennifer Collier will at the Museum guiding us through her amazing paper and stitching skills. This outstanding workshop will combine Jennifer’s trademark experimental techniques with traditional embroidery techniques. On the first day you will create surfaces, by waxing, trapping, layering and embedding into plastics and papers. On the second day you will learn a wide range of hand and machine techniques to embellish the work and transform a pile of papers into beautiful samplers. Paper is a remarkable surface to work with and Jennifer will get you thinking about it as a wonderful surface on which to stitch.
On Tuesday August 14th you will be able to see the stunning work of Susie Vickery. Her arresting portraits have been used in our advertising as they absolutely demand attention. Susie’s focus over the last ten years, has been split between development work and fine art embroidery and she will be demonstrating how to embroider a portrait of an individual from a photograph of a person’s face. This will be a day of hand-stitching joy using long stitch to create an icon-like image.
Wednesday August 15th is a day of exploring and using colour in a totally exhilarating way. Mary-Clare Buckle’s feltwork vibrates with joyous colour and she will help you work in a free and uninhibited way using fleece, silk, linen and other fibres to create a small panel. She is asking for you to bring your own source of inspiration and she will then help you form your composition using techniques on layers, colour/tone combinations.
Ruth Norbury will on August 19th be showing her students to create one of her wonderful hand stitched birds. The Stonechat is an amazing piece of textile art and we’re sure you will find Ruth’s tuition give you the opportunity to make your own masterpiece.
We have been so very fortunate to have Carol Bartlett step in to take our Masterclass on Tuesday 21st and Wednesday 22nd August. She is intrigued by the past and for this class she is asking us to bring an image of our own history to use as inspiration. Her sample is a lovingly recreated picture of the family’s first trip to Cornwall in 1970. She will guide you through selecting the fabrics and trimmings to give your piece an authentic feel of the past and build on your machine and hand stitching. Expect to be delighted with your own historic heirloom! Please note we may need cheque only payment for this late change (details on website blog) but any problems please contact us via firstname.lastname@example.org.
Our final Masterclass spaces are with Christine Chester on Thursday August 23rd. Christine is going to focus on the design work that gets us from thoughts to putting paint/stitch on fabric. She is using rocks and pebbles to provide us with a huge variety of patterns and textures to inspire. The day will look at ways of designing using your rock photos or pebbles and methods of turning your designs into prints on fabric. Whilst you will come away with fabric ready to stitch you are also learning design techniques to use in the future.
