The Festival of Stitch will be bringing together several venues that will be filled with Textile Art, many of them supported by the City and County of Swansea.
The first part of the trail starts with the Itchyfingers Textile group’s village of Llareggub which will be on display in the Dylan Thomas Centre. It brings to life the village immortalised in the classic Dylan Thomas work, ‘Under Milk Wood’. The finishing touches have been applied and the display now has a custom built dome and beautiful calligraphy around the sea, done by Judith Porch. Outside the venue the bollards will be dressed with favourite characters from Children’s Literature made by children from the local schools, a great way to get children involved in the event.
If you are following the Pink Button trail around Swansea, you may venture next to Swansea Museum where Contexart will be ‘Telling Tales’ and move past the Street Art from the students of Gower College. Their challenging and unusual work are sure to grab the eye.
Even with a few months to spare, some of the projects are already completed! Lesley Thomas has created a whimsical interpretation the children’s classic of ‘The Princess and the Pea’, and Rhian Simons is using ‘Telling Tales’ as a literal title for her piece of work.
Outside in the Museum garden, the members of the Stitching ‘B’ from the National Botanic Gardens of Wales are well on their way to making a fantastic ‘Secret Garden’. These photographs have been taken by Stephen Verbeeck, who along with other members of Morriston Camera Club will be making a photographic record of all the Street Art that will be on display in Swansea from 5th – 19th August. This will be a great reminder of what is sure to be a fantastic Festival.
