RAINBOW FEVER is heating up in Swansea ahead of Swansea Pride Week and the main Swansea Pride Celebration at Saturday 4th May!!
Yes its just a few days to go until Swansea Pride in all its glittering rainbow glory arrives in Swansea… and the plans are storming ahead to create the most all-inclusive Pride Swansea has ever seen – a FREE Community driven event not to be missed!!
The aim of this year’s Swansea Pride celebration is to raise awareness and give support to all LGBT+ Communities, with organisations, groups, companies, businesses, families and individuals all being invited to get behind and get involved in this multicoloured community driven celebration.
There is still some time for ANY ONE and EVERYONE to get involved in this year’s celebrations by attending one of the Swansea PRIDE Week Events . There is also an open invitation to join in the rainbow fun on the FREE Main Pride Day on Saturday 4th May to participate in or spectate the 2019 Swansea Pride Parade and join the Pride themed celebrations at the National Waterfront Museum Green who have kindly donated the space to the celebration.
Unite, show support, demonstrate respect to the LGBT+ Communities and most of all celebrate Equality, Diversity and Individuality through love this May.
So what is on for Swansea Pride Week and WHO is involved?
Art exhibition Pebbleshore and LGBT+ friendly artist Chameleon will host an art exhibition on 26th and 27th April at the Grand Theatre. This is an all accessible exhibition celebrating Swansea and Pride.
One of the aims for this year’s Pride is to educate and involve younger audiences and teens to Pride, To teach and allow young individuals to celebrate themselves and give confidence to accepting each other’s identities.
The Mark Jermin Stage School’s Elite Musical Theatre students will perform a youth Musical Theatre inspired showcase based on Pride to kick start the week on Tuesday 30th April at Swansea’s Cabaret bar HSYT from 7pm. In this no boundaries cabaret, the singers will break the moulds of musical theatre and perform their favourite show tunes regardless of their gender as they celebrate gender fluidity within the musical theatre community.
Wednesday 1st will see a spectacular youth variety show UP NEXT WITH PRIDE at the Princess Royal Theatre Port Talbot. Up Next with Pride features a cast of choirs, dance schools, gymnasts, singers whom will storm onto stage with an explosion of courage, confidence and of course Talent! Support for this Production is being given by Peter Lynn and Partners.
On Thursday 2nd May , a first for Swansea will see the Event “Swansea Pride Hits the Dance floor” will feature novice same gender couples partner each other on the dance floor of the Brangwyn Hall for a PRIDE inspired Strictly Come Dancing evening that promises to be utterly FAB – U – LOUS!!!
The dance event running as part of a Swansea Pride Week will feature real gay and lesbian couples from the South Wales area all competing to win the Swansea Pride Hits the Dance Floor Glitter Ball Trophy which is kindly being donated by Dawsons Property. Each pair will be introduced to local dance teachers and instructors and undergo a gruelling 10 weeks of training to get those fingers flexing and toes pointing. Amongst those aiming to achieve a perfect ten will be some of Swansea’s well-known, elite representing a variety of working backgrounds. Contestant such as KEV JOHNS partners with breakfast radio pal LEIGH JONES will be hitting the dance floor and are now well into their rehearsal process with their choreographer and dance expert Jalisa Andrews. Other parings include GEMMA PEGLER from Fitness brand Funky Pump and girlfriend DEBBIE JONES who are getting taught by Natalie Salter from the Natalie Salter Dance Company and Swansea’s own drag stars RUBY SLIPPERS and LADY EMERALD who are 2 drag queens dancing together at this fantastic event with the help of Rachel Smith from the Rachel Smith School of Dance!

Ru Paul’s Drag Race star FARRAH MOAN recently scene on screens on the latest Ru Pauls’s Drag Race All Stars Season 4, will host a pre Pride Launch party on Friday 3rd May at Swansea Venue Fiction and Vinyl with her hilarious show. Miss Moan will be making a small part of ‘herstory’ for the city as she marks the first RuPaul queen to visit the cobbles of Wind Street!
And all these plans and individual events are all driving towards the Main Pride Day in the heart of Swansea. For the Main Pride Day, the Swansea Pride Committee are hoping that this week’s celebration will be a real highlight in the Swansea calendar. Swansea Pride has support from fantastic Sponsors in the form of Unison Swansea (Council branch) who have pledged to support the Event for the next 3 years. Other brilliant support is from Swansea BID (Business Improvement District) Great Western Railway, and Swansea’s Own University of Wales Trinity Saint David. Pride Swansea will also form part of the 50th Birthday celebrations of our beautiful Swansea being a city, and the City and County of Swansea are doing a stellar job in supporting the Event and helping ensure the Main Pride Day and Event goes brilliantly!
What is going on for PRIDE on Saturday 4th May?
A vibrant and colourful Carnival style parade will hit the streets of Swansea! LGBT+ Groups and supporters will showcase their take on Pride. Local organisations and businesses who are also keen to show their support may take carnival style floats and dress up vehicles. The Co -Op whose rainbow Hearse car will be proudly driving through the city centre during this year’s Pride Parade will be joined by plenty more friendly and popular faces including Eastender stars: Charlie Brooks and Claire Norris as well as Shaheen Jafagholi and Amanda Henderson from BBC’s Casualty amongst the celebrity guests! Marching Bands and party style bands are also planned to join in the fun which will be an exciting and family friendly spectacle to watch.
There will be a fun Zumba pre Pride warm up led by Sion Ridegman from Zumba Fitness with the aim to bring a brilliant Parade to the city centre that is a culinary for the senses and hugely exciting and fun to watch or partake in- a Parade for all!
The route of the Parade will involve the city centre and some roads will be closed for the duration of the Parade. The Pride celebrations will continue, Thanks to the wonderful support from the National Waterfront Museum. The Museum site will host stalls and activity suitable for guests of all ages to enjoy. Decorations are being donated by the wonderful Mr Flag who has been an incredible support network in the past 2 years of Pride Swansea. There will be activity scheduled throughout the day throughout the area (inside the Waterfront building and amongst the Green.) This will include live music from Singers such as ShellyAnn last seen on our screens storming the competition infront of Geri Halliwell and guests on BBC’S All Together Now. She will be joined by vocalist Christopher Hughes, and popular teen acts Caitlin Mae Hogg, Nataya Carroll and Lauren Jones finalists and winner of CBBC’S Got What It Takes. There will be West End inspired Groups and performances from The Valli Boys and music from LGBT+ friendly musical Everyone’s Talking About Jamie about real life LGBT+ Inluencer Jamie Campbell. Our hostess with the mostess will be Swansea’s dynamite drag star Ruby Slippers amongst a selection of queens including Dr Bev, Tina Sparkles, Diana D, Mini Cooper, Jolene Dover, Wilma B and Lucy Lou.
Guest speakers will include The Wave and Swansea Sound Presenters celebrity guests., Other Performance acts will include Britain’s Got Talent tapper Chantelle Bellew, the MAOS Cast of Priscilla Queen of the Desert, the True Colours Choir, Gower College bands, Tribute Acts from Swansea Entertainer Jimi Webb, and more LGBT+ pop up entertainment as well as Lady Wolfe, and other acts courtesy of Marys Cardiff and Mary’s Swansea. Other activities will include The Wow Dolls, The Crowning of a Pride King and Queen, amongst the existing Swansea Street Food and Drink festival to create a wonderful atmosphere continuing the ethos of Pride.
The ever supporting teams and staff from Swansea Sound and The Wave will also be present at the celebration, and will be offering fun, performances, audience participation and competitions as they broadcast live from the Pride site.
The Glynn Vivian Art Gallery will host Pride Activity and have been so kind in allowing the Committee to host opening meetings in the space, The Grand Theatre are also showing brilliant support Thanks to the Ian McKellen fund in allowing Performance Space for Mess Up the Mess to showcase some of their work including extracts from Humanequin, a trans gender play and the Pride Cymru Icons and Allies exhibition arrives at the National Waterfront Museum from 4th May.
For those wanting to bask in their Pride Glory with maybe a cocktail or signature Cygnet Gin in hand, can do so from the Best seats in the house at Old Havana who are hosting a VIP Pride Party along with games of the hilarious GIN-Go Bingo! Bar No.6 is also hosting a Pride themed brunch and celebrations
The Celebrations will continue throughout Swansea with the most amazing Pride themed nights in LGBT+ Friendly venues such as The Kings for their Glitter Pride Party and Elysium both on High Street. A first for Swansea will see popular LGBT+ venue MARYS from Cardiff appear as part of Swansea’s Walkabout – with all the hilarity, entertainment and fabulous-ness that Marys shares with its guests. Another amazing Pride celebration will be Popworld’s Pride Zumba Night kicking off from 9.30pm
There will also be an ongoing presence of Pride within the City Centre with businesses and supporting shops, The Quadrant, and cafes and organisations joining the PRIDE Celebrations by decorating their windows and displays and putting on their own Pride days. Some discounts may be offered for all Pride guests.
And the celebrations continue well into the Bank Holiday weekend….An interfaith service in Pride, Love and Faith is being offered by the Unitarian Church on Sunday 5th May at 2pm and this is open to all guests and faiths.

We envisage this growing annual celebration to benefit every South Wales business and organisation in bringing more and more people into the city centre to engage and celebrate Pride and also to unite businesses and organisations in being super transparent and open in supporting Equality and Diversity. We are inviting you and your business to join this year’s rainbow movement, to show your support, and to engage with our community in supporting any existing staff, friends, family or colleagues of the LGBT+ Community
There are a number of ways to get involved:
- You are of course very welcome to attend the Event
- Enjoy the Entertainment on the National Waterfront Green (the main site for the celebration)
- Attend a Pride themed event surrounding the celebration, (there are various events all over the city centre during Pride week)
- Let your boldness and creativity run wild for you, your friends, work colleague, family members, or staff by taking part in the Pride Parade as it takes a city centre route or if you have the capacity,
- Volunteer at the Day – the Committee are extremely low in staff / help to set up, steward and generally offer well being and help on the Main Pride Day, If you could spare any time on this, we’d love to hear from you- An informal training morning will take place on Saturday 27th April for ALL Aspiring Volunteers, Please attend the Grand Theatre Swansea and join us the Swansea Pride Committee to join in all the rainbow fun as a Volunteer. If you’ve got a Business in Swansea… You’re also very welcome to also show your support in other ways including:
- Decorate your business, this could be interior, it could be in the form of a Rainbow themed shop fronts, or Digitally? Turning your logo, Your Social Media logo / page into the Rainbow Colours or even putting up rainbow bunting or flags outside your front of business?
- During the Main Pride Day or even for the duration of Swansea Pride Week, you could put on a special offer in the theme of Pride or Rainbow theme? For example, if you sell food or beverages you may want to offer a rainbow drink, a rainbow salad or even serve your food and drinks in rainbow cups? You could entice customers who are seen to be supporting LGBT+ a certain offer? “5% discount for anyone who sports a rainbow on 4th May?” – Absolutely anything would be marvellous in raising awareness of Swansea Pride and spreading the support. The discounts / offers / campaigns and promotions are entirely up to you?
- Make a business donation to the Swansea Pride Committee which is fully constituted, has its own Treasurers Bank Account and is looking to be a support network for equalities/LGBT+ issues in Swansea and the surrounding area going forward. 100% of your donation will go entirely to the Event and will help tremendously in ensuring we provide a safe and secure Celebration.
