“It’s been another fantastic year for sport in Swansea.”
A TRIO of super swimmers is in the race to be named Swansea’s Sportsperson of the Year. Jazz Carlin, Georgia Davies and Jack Thomas have been shortlisted for the honour at the annual Swansea Sports Awards taking place at Penyrheol Theatre on Thursday February 26.
The winner will follow in the footsteps of stars including triathlete Non Stafford, rugby international Alun-Wyn Jones and Swans manager Garry Monk. Members of the public can go along to awards evening. Tickets are available from www.swansea.gov.uk/sportsawards or by calling 01792 897039.
There are 14 different categories in this year’s Swansea Sports Awards including Community Coach of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Junior Disabled Sportsperson of the Year and Primary School Team of the Year.
Jazz Carlin, who trained until very recently at the Wales National Pool Swansea, won a gold medal in the women’s 800-metre freestyle and a silver medal in the women’s 400-metre freestyle at last year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Georgia Davies, who is from Swansea and also trained at the Wales National Pool, won a gold medal in the 50-metre backstroke and a silver medal in the 100-metre backstroke at the same event.
Jack Thomas and Daniel Jervis, who both are up for awards and still train at the Wales National Pool, took bronze medals medals in the 200-metre freestyle S14 and 1500m freestyle respectfully.
Cllr Mark Child, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Wellbeing and Healthy City, said: “It’s been another fantastic year for sport in Swansea. As well as the success of our super swimmers, the Swans are continuing to perform fantastically well in the Premier League, a number of Ospreys players like Rhys Webb and Dan Biggar have cemented their places in the Welsh rugby team, and Swansea played host to the IPC Athletics European Championships last August.
“But sport in Swansea is about so much more than our elite teams and stars. It’s also about our young people, our clubs, our coaches and our volunteers who contribute so much to our status as a leading city of sport. This is why the annual Swansea Sports Awards recognises people involved in sport at all levels right across the city. I’d urge people to get tickets and honour our sports stars and unsung sporting heroes.”
