The Festival of Stitch is finally here, and in our final guest blog, we’re taking a look at what’s in store over the next few weeks!
The Festival weekend of the 13th and 14th August will be a very busy one. Along with the Street Art and Exhibitions there will be a great Makers Market in a marquee outside the National Waterfront Museum and free drop in sessions to learn new stitch techniques at the marquee in Portland Street.
At the same time as the Makers Market the Uplands Market will be held around the Marina as usual and it will be great to shop at the both venues and there certainly will be plenty of goods to choose from. They have 13 makers from all over Wales, Mandy Nash, Claire Cawte, Sasha Kingston, Fferm Jojo, Sara Fisher, Cynth Weyman, Ali Scott, Holly Hart, Catrin Saywell, Smith and Jones Knits, Sewn by Rachael, Woven by Alice, Pat Johnson. All their work will be a feast for the eyes!
At the Little Shop of Skills in Portland Street people will have the chance to learn ‘stitch techniques’ new and old. Our traditional techniques are Dorset Buttons, Sashiko, Pieced Paper Patchwork, Redwork, Trapunto, Felt making, Knitting and Fabric Manipulation. More up to date are a new slant on canvas work, using a soldering iron on fabrics, machine embroidery, block printing on fabric and upcycling with tutor Ruth Norbury, creating lovely embroideries on teabag paper.
Alongside the Makers Market they have ‘heartfelt2inspire’ a local felting duo who will be demonstrating felting and selling their creations. We are also pleased to bring the members of the Tawe Guild of Spinners, Weavers and Dyers to Museum Green to demonstrate their skills.
All in all it will be an interesting and eventful weekend, no matter the weather!
