There’s not long to go now! If you haven’t already secured your place in this year’s Admiral Swansea Bay 10k, you’ve only got until 31st August to sign up. The race itself takes place on Sunday 20th September.
Feeling unsure?
Don’t be! Fully qualified fitness instructors in our five Active Swansea Centres can get you race ready with their specialised 10k training programmes. Designed to suit all abilities from complete beginners to experienced runners, the programmes cover all manner of helpful advice. Whether you need nutritional information and advice on what to wear, or guidance on running techniques and how to prevent injury, look no further. They have also prepared a number of free online guides / training plans, and will act as an endless source of motivation – you’ll almost fly over that finish line!
The Admiral Swansea Bay 10k itself is widely regarded as one of the UK’s premier road races, boasting a flat, fast, and scenic route alongside the magnificent views of Swansea Bay – much nicer than staring at a gym wall!
Don’t forget – in addition to the 10k, there are also 1k, 3k and 5k junior races.
Still unsure?
It’s been proven that regular physical exercise such as training for a 10k race can help boost both physical and mental health.
Don’t just take our word for it. We recently caught up with Luke Zasikowski, an Insurance Consultant for race sponsors, Admiral. A seasoned runner who has a marathon, six half marathons, eight 10k races, and numerous 5 mile runs around his native Cardiff under his belt, Luke has experienced major physical and mental health benefits since taking up regular exercise. Never one to miss out on a great opportunity, we also pressed him to share a few of his personal top training tips.
You obviously enjoy running and have a fair amount of experience, but you haven’t taken part in the Admiral Swansea Bay 10k before. What has prompted you to head west and sign up this year?
Lots of people have told me that it is a fantastic event, and having already run in the Admiral sponsored Newport half marathon, I wanted to sample the atmosphere in Swansea.
Have you noticed any improvements in your health since you started running?
Yes, lots. Running has made me a lot stronger. I sleep better and catch fewer seasonal illnesses. I suffer from anxiety and depression, but since I started training and improving my health and fitness, it has become a lot more level which has been brilliant.
Do you have any personal tips that could help less experienced / first time runners in this year’s race?
- Get fitted for running shoes at a local specialist to avoid / reduce potential injury.
- Make sure you stay well hydrated at all times.
- Complete 10% of your training barefoot on grass to help your technique.
- Don’t eat within approx. an hour of a run.
- Don’t get too caught up in times or pacing, run for fun.
- Last, but not least – Enjoy it!
Finally, have you got anything lined up after the Admiral Swansea Bay 10k, or are you going to take a well-earned rest?!
Yes, I hope to be able to run an Ultra marathon within the next 12 months (30+ miles)!
Now you’ve been thoroughly convinced, don’t delay and sign up immediately. We’ll see you at the start line!
Don’t forget the date!
