VISITORS to Swansea’s Oystermouth Castle will be transported back to ancient Rome later this year with the return of outdoor cinema.
Gladiator will be among the movies shown on a giant screen outdoors at the historic attraction, thanks to a partnership between Swansea Council and The Luna Cinema.
The movie, starring Russell Crowe, will be shown at the castle during the evening of Wednesday September 13. Mamma Mia, starring Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan, will then be shown during the evening of Thursday September 14.
Tickets for both movies go on sale at www.thelunacinema.com from 10am this morning (Friday March 31).
Frances Jenkins, Swansea Council’s Strategic Manager for Culture, Tourism, Marketing and Events, said: “The screening of Gladiator and Mamma Mia follow on from the successful screenings of Grease and Back to the Future at the castle last year.
“These outdoor cinema movie screenings are very popular with residents and visitors to the city, so it’s pleasing that we’ve been able to work with The Luna Cinema for similar events in September.
“The screenings are among many events and activities taking place at the castle this summer as we continue to celebrate the landmark’s rich history.”
Oystermouth Castle, which dates back to the 12th century, is open to the public this year from tomorrow (Saturday April 1) until September 30.
Forthcoming events include a photographic exhibition and guided tours on Saturday, a dungeons and dragons day on Saturday April 8, and a craft workshop for three to 11-year-olds between 11.30am and 3.30pm on Wednesday April 12.
Features of the castle include ancient artwork from the 14th Century, a 30-foot high glass bridge and private staircases leading from vaults to rooms once used as banqueting halls.
