Swansea will soon be transformed with Street Art as a two week extravaganza of stitch takes place in the city between the 5 – 19th August. A range of groups have already been busy stitching, weaving, dyeing and sewing in preparation for the Festival of Stitch and here’s a taster of what people have been up to:
Ladies from Llys Elba Sheltered Housing have been producing some fantastic bunting to decorate the trees along Princess Way.
Swansea Bay Regional Equality Council will be bringing life into children’s stories from around the World by creating a display in front of Swansea Castle.
The ladies of the Stitching ‘B’ from the National Botanical Gardens have been working hard to create a Secret Garden in a structure that will be in the garden of Swansea Museum – there will even be animals in the Secret Garden to see too.
The Art Group from Cefn Coed Hospital have called their project ‘Stitch to Recovery’ and have had people recovering from acute mental illness learning new skills in weaving, dyeing and sewing as well as design. Ably led by the Occupational Therapy Team, they’ve developed a scene using ‘The owl and the Pussycat’ by Edward Lear as inspiration. They’ve pulled in a few favours and used an actual bath as the ‘boat’ and used washing scourers, buttons, dyed fabrics, bags and even the used bodies of water dispensers to make the main two characters! The scene will be in the courtyard of the Tapestri Llys Glas at 37, Orchard Street in Swansea.
