SCORES of people are expected to pack into the Dylan Thomas Centre next Friday 25 September for the launch of the Black History Month Wales.
People from across South Wales are invited to attend the event which starts national celebrations devoted to the history of black people and their contribution to Wales.
Swansea Council is supporting the event organised by Black History Association Wales in partnership with the city’s African Community Centre.
Friday’s launch event, featuring Floetic Lara, kicks-off this jam packed season of talks, workshops, screenings and performances across Wales.
Rhythmic poetess, Lara Lee aka FLO, will perform an inspired set accompanied by talented local young women – the culmination of intensive song, poetry and performance workshops led by Lara, who recently made the live shows on BBC’s The Voice under superstar coach Sir Tom Jones.
Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Enterprise, Development and Regeneration, Cllr Robert Francis-Davies said: “It’s fitting that Swansea is hosting the launch of Black History Month in Wales. It is a diverse, dynamic city with a proud tradition of celebrating the different cultures of its communities.
“We value the contributions all members of our community, including the African diaspora, have made to our shared history and I’m sure Black History Month Wales will capture and share their role through a wide range of creative activity for people of all ages”
The celebrations continue throughout October with a series of events across Wales including a special workshop at the Dylan Thomas Centre on Wednesday 28 October.
Artist Viv Rhule, known for her use of themes such as origins and transformations to explore the past through experimentations with textiles and printmaking, will be drawing inspiration from black female writers for the special flag making workshop.
