NAWR (meaning NOW in Welsh) is a concert series in Swansea that showcases experimental music, free improvisation, film, lo-fi, free jazz, sound art, alternative folk and new music. As part of this year’s Swansea International Festival, a collaboration with NAWR brings three fascinating, unique concerts to the festival.
NAWR hold their concerts at Swansea Studios UWTSD in the historic BBC Hall, a hidden gem among Swansea’s concert halls and one of the finest listening spaces in Wales. They aim to offer an open and reflective space for an audience to experience new music in a welcoming and intimate setting.
The second concert in the series will see Angharad Davies & Lee Patterson and Susan Matthews & Ian Holloway perform.
Angharad Davies
Angharad Davies is a Welsh violinist working with free-improvisation, compositions and performance. Her approach to sound involves attentive listening and exploring beyond the sonic confines of her instrument, her classical training and performance expectation.
Much of her work involves collaboration. She has long standing duos with Tisha Mukarji, Dominic Lash and Lina Lapelyte and plays with Apartment House, Cranc, Common Objects, Richard Dawson’s band and Skogen. She has been involved in projects with Tarek Atui, Tony Conrad, Laura Cannell, Jack McNamara, Eliane Radigue, Juliet Stephenson and J.G.Thirlwell.
She has released records on Absinth Records, Another Timbre, Potlatch and Confrontrecords and her album Ffansion | Fancies was voted in the top 12 albums for Radio 3’s Late Junction.
Lee Patterson
Lee Patterson lives and works in Prestwich, Manchester, UK. Drawing upon his parallel practice of sound recording as a form of training for the ears, he performs live with a selection of amplified devices and processes. From rock chalk to springs, from burning nuts to vibrating metal, he plays with objects otherwise considered mute in his attempts to understand and interpret his surroundings through different ways of listening. his unorthodox approach to generating sound has led to collaborations with a host of international artists and musicians. His works have featured on UK TV, BBC Radios 3, 4 and 6, Resonance FM and on radio stations worldwide.
Susan Matthews
Susan Matthews is a Carmarthen-based composer/musician known for her intense, ambitious, hypnotic harmonies and industrial noise creations. She began composing experimental music, described by d/a73 as ‘…dazzling abstractions of grace and beauty’, in the 1990s and has developed a comprehensive CV of achievements, including over 50 CD releases, gallery works, festival inclusions, artist residencies, live performances, film soundtracks, radio airplay, both at home and abroad.
In 2005 she founded the independent record label Siren Wire Recordings specialising in handmade limited edition CD releases of music by carefully selected experimental artists from around the globe. She has also recorded music for Tursa, Apollolaan, Sonic Oyster Records, Earth Monkey Productions, Wild Silence, Pilot Eleven and d/a73.
An ardent collaborator, she has successfully worked with many of her favourite artists, including Tony Wakeford (UK, with Sol Invictus and also as Window Tappers), Rainier Lericolais (France), Clint Newton (USA, as Harme), Clutter (UK), The Dead Mauriacs (France), Ian Holloway (Wales), Thorsten Soltau (Germany), Alistair Crosbie (Scotland), Yokna Patofa (Japan), Nick Grey (Monaco) and Fabrizio Modonese Palumbo (Italy).
In 2017 she co-founded Divergent Contemporary Art Collective who have exhibited in Carmarthen, Swansea and Oslo.
Ian Holloway
Ian Holloway is a musician working out of Swansea whose work encompasses drone, field recordings, post-industrial found sounds, hauntology and radiophonics. Since 2003 Ian has run the Quiet World label releasing his own music and works by musicians such as Texan plunderphonic maestro Colin Andrew Sheffield, New York ambient musician Mike Fazio and legendary Fluxus composer Philip Corner.
Alongside his solo work, Ian has recorded and performed in collaboration with musicians such as pianist and composer Susan Matthews, drone musician Darren Tate, field recordist Banks Bailey, film maker Rhodri Thomas and artist Tessa Garland and has released numerous albums under various guises for labels such as Siren Wire, Fungal, Phonospheric, Bivouac, Agharta, Persepolis and more.
Alongside his music Ian runs the Wyrd Britain blog and book shop.
